Three Decades of Preservation and Purpose
The Society's own history began more than 30 years ago with a small group of individuals who realized that no local organization was solely dedicated to the preservation of San Juan County's historical records. Source documents were not only hard to find, but they were disappearing.
This group of energetic volunteers developed an organizational and financial plan and soon opened the doors of an archive that has become the home of San Juan County's historical preservation and research.
Our Location
Since then, this archive at 201 North Main Avenue in Aztec has grown and is now bursting at the seams. It houses a library and documents that preserve the county's story for historical, family, and scholarly research. Maps, newspapers, journals, scrapbooks, governmental records, cemetery records, personal accounts, and biographical files are preserved in an archival setting.
The organization's publication programs cover our story with depth and respect. The Society has published 20 books on topics from pioneers and outlaws to place names and lost communities.
